Philcon 2009 Principal Speaker: Catherine Asaro


I am pleased to announce that Catherine Asaro has accepted our
invitation to be Philcon 2009's Principal Speaker.

Ms. Asaro, a Nebula Award winning author, has recently released the book
"Diamond Star" featuring a soundtrack CD of the same name, produced in
collaboration with the Baltimore band Point Valid.

Additionally, Ms. Asaro is a physicist, musician, and former professional ballet
dancer. She is also involved in education and was twice president of the Science
Fiction Writers Association, SFWA.

Catherine Asaro exemplifies the dynamically interesting guests that Philcon 2009

Frank Wu is a science fiction and fantasy artist living in Palo Alto.
He won the Hugo Award for Best Fan Artist in 2004, 2006, and 2007; he was previously nominated in 2002 and 2003. He also won the Grand Prize (the Gold Award) in the Illustrators of the Future contest in 2002. In 2008 he was nominated for a fourth Hugo Award for Best Fan Artist, but declined the nomination.

He works in many media, including acrylic and digital painting. He created a portrait of a Klingon girl for the documentary about the Klingon language, Earthlings: Ugly Bags of Mostly Water. He is a regular contributor to science fiction webzines, such as "The Drink Tank."

Wu is also a filmmaker, having released in 2006 the animated short, "The Tragical Historie of Guidolon the Giant Space Chicken".A Director's Cut of this short was released in 2007, and a full-length version is now in production.

In addition to being an artist, Dr. Wu holds a Ph.D. in bacterial genetics from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also a member of BASFA, the Bay Area Science Fiction Association.

Philcon 2009 Special Guest: L.A. Banks

New York Times Best Selling Author L.A Banks has agreed to be our Special Guest.

Ms. Banks is well known for her Vampire Huntress Series of novels which has recently begun adaptation into graphic novels and manga. Ms. Banks has written for a number of major publishers including Simon and Shuster, St. Martin’s Press, BET/Arabesque, Harper and Tor. Her works have been optioned for movies.

She had published in newspapers, magazines and anthologies, worked with community organizations and technology companies and has been featured on the Vampire Literature and Legends program shown on Cable service HBO.

Philcon 2009 Special Guest: Cory Doctorow

We are pleased to announce that Cory Doctorow will be a Special Guest at Philcon 2009. Mr Doctorow's current book is the Hugo-nominated "Little Brother". He is also known as a futurist, Blogger Extraordinaire co-editing the popular BoingBoing blog, and for his Digital Rights Activism, as a fellow of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and his work on the Creative Commons initiative. Mr. Doctorow is in the tradition of Philcon presenting the most interesting and thought provoking guests. Please join us in November for Philcon 2009.
